Which AI tools belong at work?

Start with the work your team needs to finish. Then compare the controls and the bill.

These are business products built around models, not seven interchangeable LLMs. The benefits below are our analysis of public documentation, not a performance ranking or hands-on benchmark.

Categories overlap. API access is another purchase and deployment decision; a workplace seat does not establish API entitlement.

General-purpose work

ChatGPT Enterprise

Research and multi-step work across connected tools

ChatGPT Work can gather connected information and produce documents, presentations, and analyses for review. The benefit to evaluate is one managed workspace for several kinds of knowledge work.

Business controls and costs

Enterprise documentation describes role controls, supported audit logging, and no model training on business data by default. A connected service still has its own permissions; a shared connection can expose more than a user’s personal connection.

Workspace credits and spend controls apply to eligible activity, not all API billing. No contract price is established in this guide. Ask for seats, included credits, overages, and API charges separately.

What to test before buying

Run a source-backed account brief using two approved systems. Check citations, inaccessible files, and whether actions require the intended approval.

Treat access to the assistant, access to a connected account, and permission to take an action as three separate decisions.

General-purpose work

Claude Enterprise

Document work and engineering under one purchase

The current Enterprise seat includes Claude chat, Claude Code, and Cowork. Documented workplace connectors bring in context from tools such as Drive, Microsoft 365, Slack, and GitHub.

Business controls and costs

The Enterprise documentation lists SCIM, audit logs, retention controls, and compliance and analytics APIs. Confirm the configuration and contract scope needed by your organization.

The current usage-based plan charges an annual seat subscription plus usage at API rates; the seat fee includes no token allowance. Older contracts can differ. Published seat offers are not a complete workload price.

What to test before buying

Give it a policy comparison and a small repository change. Record review effort and usage for each, rather than assuming a single seat means unlimited work.

For a busy team, consumption can matter more than the access fee. Set organization and user spend limits before a broad rollout.

Gemini in Google Workspace

Help where a Google Workspace team already works

Google documents AI assistance across Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet, and Drive. For a Workspace organization, the practical benefit is less copying between the work and a separate assistant.

Business controls and costs

Workspace’s documented controls include source permissions and protections for eligible business accounts. The consumer Gemini experience is not a substitute for verifying your organization’s licensed protections.

Evaluate the Workspace edition and included AI features. This guide does not establish a regional seat price. Compare the incremental upgrade cost against the licenses you already own.

What to test before buying

Use a meeting, an email thread, and a Drive document to create a follow-up. Include a restricted file and test that access stays restricted.

Google says Gemini cannot act on files encrypted with customer-controlled keys. Stronger isolation can intentionally make some information unavailable to the assistant.

Office suite

Microsoft 365 Copilot

Work inside Microsoft’s document and meeting tools

The paid Microsoft 365 Copilot offer adds business-data grounding and assistance in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. This is worth evaluating when those applications hold your team’s work.

Business controls and costs

Microsoft documents enterprise data protection and IT management. Verify the exact licenses and tenant settings; the name Copilot covers more than one offering.

Copilot Chat is included with eligible subscriptions; Microsoft 365 Copilot requires a qualifying base license. Agent scenarios can have separate metering. The advertised seat fee is not the whole software budget.

What to test before buying

Turn a Teams meeting and an approved document into a Word brief and PowerPoint outline. Check citations, access permissions, and the time spent correcting the result.

Do not equate included Copilot Chat with every paid Microsoft 365 Copilot capability. Ask which part of the demonstrated workflow requires another license.

General-purpose work

Grok Business / Enterprise

Shared research with company documents

xAI documents Google Drive access with permission-aware retrieval, document citations, and shared projects. The benefit to test is whether employees can find usable answers from company material.

Business controls and costs

The Enterprise offer lists custom SSO, SCIM, and audit/security controls. Enterprise Vault is a separate offering with a dedicated data plane and customer-managed keys; do not assume it is included in every plan.

Enterprise is contact-sales. Request the user count, usage terms, and Vault cost separately. A Business offer does not establish the price or controls of an Enterprise contract.

What to test before buying

Ask a question answered by several Drive documents, including an obsolete one. Inspect the cited passages and repeat the query as a user with less access.

An answer with a citation can still use the wrong version or miss context. Evaluate retrieval accuracy rather than treating a citation as proof.

Software development

Cursor

Coding work with centrally managed agent controls

Cursor is a development environment, not a standalone language model. Its enterprise documentation covers model selection, repository integrations, cloud agents, and code-review tooling.

Business controls and costs

Enterprise controls include SCIM, audit logs, model and repository restrictions, and org-wide privacy enforcement. Teams and Enterprise have different control sets.

Enterprise pricing is custom. The public pricing page and Teams documentation show different seat structures as checked for this guide. Confirm the applicable offer, usage pool, and overage terms in writing.

What to test before buying

Use a real bug with a failing test. Inspect the diff, run tests, and measure reviewer time. Test repository restrictions and whether an agent can execute commands outside its intended scope.

Do not compare a Cursor seat directly with a chat subscription. It includes a coding workflow around models; generated changes still need your normal review process.

Research

Perplexity Enterprise

Finding answers across connected files

Enterprise file connectors let users ask questions over services including Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint, Dropbox, and Box. Admins can enable or disable connectors.

Business controls and costs

Connected-file access and shared answers are different: a shared session can expose an answer even when the reader cannot open the original file. Review sharing as well as connector access.

Plan-specific file and size limits apply. Pricing was not verified in this guide; request the applicable Enterprise plan, seats, and allowances instead of budgeting from a consumer plan.

What to test before buying

Compare a current source file with an imported Project copy. Change the source and ask again; verify which answer used which version.

The docs distinguish live search from imported copies, but give inconsistent deletion guidance in different sections. Confirm and test deletion and revoked-access behavior before using sensitive files.

Make the pilot earn its budget.

Choose three recurring jobs and use the same inputs across your shortlist. Record whether the result was usable, how long a person spent correcting it, and the usage charged. A faster first draft is not a saving if the review takes longer.

  1. Check the answer. Verify important statements against the supplied source. Include one question the material cannot answer.
  2. Check access. Run the same task as two users with different file permissions. Test shared results and removed access.
  3. Check actions. Confirm who can approve sending, editing, running commands, or publishing. Start with a reversible test.
  4. Check the full bill. Add seats, required base licenses, metered usage, connectors, and rollout work. Record the model and plan used.

Do not turn those observations into a universal winner. Select the product that passes your required work and controls at an acceptable total cost.

A few terms worth separating

SSO vs. SCIM
SSO manages sign-in. SCIM helps provision and remove accounts. Neither tells you every action an agent may take.
No training vs. no retention
A commitment not to train on business data does not mean no data is stored. Review retention, logs, connected services, and deletion separately.
Model vs. application
A model produces outputs. An application adds context, tools, permissions, and billing. The same model inside different products can produce a different workflow and bill.
